Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Are your tanks manufactured in the USA?

You bet! We use American sourced steel.

  • What is the design pressure of your AST’s?

MAWP is 1psi / Vacuum .5/oz – these are ATMOSPHERIC tanks and MUST be vented.

  • Do you make propane tanks?

No, LP or propane tanks are a pressure vessel and require an ASME fabricator.

  • Does Southern Tank leak test their tanks?

YES!! We test per UL 142 standards with a pneumatic test using a soap and water solution – every tank at least twice. We have an excellent QC program.

  • Where do you ship?

We ship all over the USA. We deliver on our own trucks within a 300 mile radius and have exceptional freight partners for long distance deliveries.

  • How do I know which tank to use?

There is no simple answer to this one. Local fire code and your authority having jurisdiction will be the place to start. Give us a call so we can point you in the right direction.

  • How do I assemble the stand and overhead tank for my gravity unit?

The trick is do NOT fully tighten the included nuts & bolts until everything is together. See overhead gravity tank assembly instructions and this photo of assembled gravity equipment.

  • Do I need a concrete base for my tank?

The foundation should evenly support the tank to prevent movement or uneven settling that could impose unacceptable stress on the tank. Box skid supports are useful if a concrete slab is not possible. Saddle supports may require piers depending on the size of the tank. A reinforced-concrete slab over a stable subbase should suffice in most situations. Typical concrete depths based on existing systems are 6″ to 8″. Tank bottoms should never be placed directly in contact with the soil unless corrosion protection is in place. Southern Tank does not provide engineering services for foundation design and does not guarantee that the information provided here will pertain to your installation.

  • What maintenance is required?

    Routine tasks include:

    • Checking for corrosion or leaks around joints and fittings, touch up coating
    • Inspecting for leaks at pumps, filters, hoses, nozzles, valves and gauges
    • Cleaning spill containment areas
    • Ensuring vents are not blocked
    • If fuel is stored, check for water, bacterial or microbial growth

  • What records should I keep?

    Maintain documentation for:

    • Inspections and maintenance
    • Fuel deliveries and usage (if required)
    • Compliance reports, SPCC plan if required
    • Record tank label number if tank is UL 142 or STI registered
    • Copy of registration/warranty document (F921®, FIREGUARD®, FLAMESHIELD® and GenTank®) after you’ve installed the tank. This needs to be submitted direct to STI by the installer/owner.
    • Tank invoice
